Investigates and
diagnoses human disorders and diseases, and administers treatment.
It must be noted
that in some countries the term “Physician” has the same meaning as General practitioner or Family Doctor in South Africa. When South Africans
refer to a “Physician” they are referring to a Medical Doctor who is a
specialist in internal medicine; i.e. a specialist who does not use surgery to
cure disease. So, a South African Physician is already a specialist and the
term "specialist" does not have to be used in front of his or her
name.
The Health
Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) uses the name “General Physician”
for such a specialist and it is the occupation of a General Physician that is
described here.
